Leadership Development – Why we need it & the challenges leaders are facing today

Leadership development is important for anyone that

holds a leadership position or owns a business.

There are many entrepreneurs and/or people placed in positions to lead that have the job skills but not the leadership skills.

Without leadership development, there isn’t growth or change for the organization or the community.

What are the biggest challenges facing leadership right now?

Changing workers

Leaders are challenged by the shift in workforce personalities. Workers are looking for the following:

  1. leaders who understand and embrace digital technologies,

  2. leaders who have sensitivity to workers personal needs,

  3. leaders who are more flexible and socially aware, and

  4. leaders who embrace diversity.

Anyone who leads or manages workers needs to be able to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of social interaction. While the basic tenants of human interaction remain, how we interact with each other is something that poses a challenge to leaders.

Virtual Workplace

The continued expansion of distance and virtual workplaces requires leaders to shift away from face-to-face leadership to distance leadership. The new model of the workplace, that crosses geographies, cultures, and technologies, will require leadership competencies that are different from the workplaces of the past.

Digitalization and New Technologies

Leaders must understand, continue to learn, and embrace new technologies and the digital world. The Internet of Things is a challenge that will require new leadership competencies that may shift the role of the leader from the one everyone looks up to - to the role of learner, sharer, and engager.

How can we encourage Leadership Development in the everyday environment?

Encouraging leaders you know (including yourself) to always

  • seek new information

  • find out what is changing

  • find out how they can be better leaders

This will be a huge step toward helping the current leaders be better leaders for tomorrow.

Here are a few resources to work on Leadership Development

  • Self-Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence by Neck, Manz, and Houghton (2017)

  • Leadership 2050: Critical Challenges, Key Contexts, and Emerging Trends edited by Sowcik, Andenoro, McNutt, and Murphy (2015)

Both of these books offered the practical information about leadership, and how leadership, as a concept, will need to evolve to face future challenges.
